Founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison , Bob Miner and Ed Oates , Oracle began its journey under the name Software Development Laboratories . Between 1977 and 1982 the company took on one more name – Relations Software Inc . – before becoming Oracle Corporation in 1982 . In 1986 , the company went public and became one of the largest database management companies the following year in 1987 . Oracle provides multiple industries with products and services that address a wide variety of aspects in the corporate information technology environment .
