CHICAGO , USA [ 83,245,472 ] Beginning as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54 airplanes in 1944 , the airport was named after the US ’ first Medal of Honour recipient during the course of World War Two , Edward O ’ Hare . Among the first airports to be developed following the end of the war , the building ’ s design pioneered innovative concepts which would become commonplace in later years : concourses , highway access to the terminal , underground refuelling systems and bridges to cover and guide passengers directly into the aircraft . O ’ Hare IA held the distinction of being the world ’ s busiest airport for 35 years ( 1963 to 1998 ).
